The Biosimilar Business: Selling Copies of OthersNarrow moat

Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet

Amgen sells about $3 billion of copies of other companies' drugs, a business that grows by launching and shrinks once rivals arrive.

Amgen is on both sides of the biosimilar trade. It loses sales to copies of its own drugs, Prolia and XGEVA most painfully, and it sells copies of other companies' drugs. Since 2018 it has launched eight biosimilars1, and in 2025 they sold about $3,024 million2, about 8.6% of product sales3.

Grows by launching, shrinks between launches.

The business rests on manufacturing. A biosimilar requires the same plants, quality systems and regulatory skill as an original biologic, which Amgen has had for four decades. That lets it launch copies quickly and reliably, and it is why PAVBLU could be the only commercially available biosimilar to EYLEA in the U.S. during this period4.

The economics are those of a commodity. Amgen's 10-K says that once multiple biosimilar versions have launched, competition intensifies rapidly, resulting in accelerated net price declines for both the reference and the biosimilar products5. Its own copies show it: AMJEVITA fell about 22% in 20256, MVASI is well below its 2021 peak78.

So the band grows by launching. It rose from $1,831 million in 2022 to $3,024 million in 20259, mostly from PAVBLU and WEZLANA. The second quarter of 2026 brought $855 million10.

Amgen's own defence of the business is not price. Its 10-K says that although biosimilars compete on price, many patients, providers and payers will continue to place high value on the reputation, supply reliability and safety of our products11. That is a claim about manufacturing, the advantage a smaller rival cannot copy quickly. PAVBLU's first full year, $700 million12, supports it; AMJEVITA's American sales of $26 million in the second quarter of 202613 are the evidence against.

Call it narrow at best. What would falsify even that is a year of falling biosimilar sales without a new launch to replace them. If the band drops below $2.5 billion when PAVBLU meets competition, the business will have shown it has no lasting advantage beyond timing.

Moat trajectory: Widening

PAVBLU and WEZLANA carried the band to $3.0bn in 2025.

Biosimilar sales, latest quarter
$855M (Q2 2026)

The copy business's size; falling below $2.5bn a year when PAVBLU meets rivals would show no lasting edge.

How it's calculated: AMJEVITA ($155M) plus PAVBLU ($287M) plus WEZLANA ($61M) plus MVASI ($153M) plus biosimilars inside other products ($199M) in Q2 2026, from Amgen's Q2 2026 results release.
