Established Products and Other RevenuesThin moat
Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet
Amgen's founding drugs have halved since 2019, but in the second quarter of 2026 they grew 19% on higher prices.
The last band holds Amgen's past and its royalties. It sold $4,408 million in 20251, about 12.0% of total revenues2: Aranesp $1,389 million, Neulasta $435 million, Parsabiv $353 million, non-biosimilar other products about $628 million, and other revenues of $1,603 million345.
This is where Amgen's founding franchises ended up. The band sold $9,038 million in 20196 and has roughly halved since7. Neulasta fell from $4,534 million in 2017 to $435 million in 202589 as copies launched10; Sensipar went from $1,774 million in 2018 to $64 million in 2022 after losing exclusivity1112; EPOGEN and NEUPOGEN are now folded into other products13.
Other revenues are the steady part: royalty income and corporate partner revenue of $1,158 million in 2019 and $1,603 million in 20251415, carrying no cost of goods.
The second quarter of 2026 surprised. The band sold $1,301 million against $1,103 million a year earlier16, about 18% more17. Amgen's established products, Aranesp, Neulasta and Parsabiv, sold $632 million, up 19%, driven by 15% higher net selling price and 2% volume growth18; Neulasta alone was $179 million against $82 million19; and other revenues rose 27%20. Old drugs can sometimes raise prices.
Amgen reports no profit by line, but these products have long been paid for and their costs are mostly manufacturing.
Some old drugs fade slowly. Aranesp sold $1,729 million in 2019 and $1,389 million in 20252122, and Parsabiv, $353 million in 202523, grew 10% in the second quarter of 202624. The band will not grow for long, but it is not melting as fast as its first half-decade suggested.
The outlook is gentle decline, interrupted by quarters like this one. The verdict depends on whether the price rises hold: if the established products keep growing through 2026, the band is a small cash cow rather than a melting one; a return to double-digit declines would put it back on the path it has followed since 2019.
Up about 18% in Q2 2026 after years of decline.
Whether old drugs can hold their prices; a return to double-digit declines would resume the melt.
