BiosimilarsThin moat
Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet
Amgen's biosimilars grew 29% in the second quarter of 2026, almost all from PAVBLU, a lead that ends when the next EYLEA copy arrives.
Biosimilars are Amgen's copies of other companies' biologics, and they sold $3,024 million in 20251, about 8.2% of total revenues2. Inside are AMJEVITA, a copy of Humira, $597 million; PAVBLU, a copy of EYLEA, $700 million; WEZLANA, a copy of STELARA, $273 million; MVASI, a copy of Avastin, $771 million; and $683 million of copies Amgen reports only as a total inside other products3. Amgen has launched eight since 20184.
The history is launch-driven. The band sold $568 million in 2019, $2,177 million in 2021, fell to $1,831 million in 2022 as the cancer copies faced competition, and rose to $3,024 million in 20255. The figures for 2019 to 2021 are understated, because Amgen did not disclose the copies inside other products in those years.
A biosimilar is paid for like any biologic, but it is chosen on price. Amgen's 10-K says that once several copies launch, competition intensifies rapidly, resulting in accelerated net price declines6. That is visible in MVASI, which fell 20% in the second quarter of 2026 on 16% lower net selling price7. Amgen reports no profit by line, so the margin is unknown.
Growth is currently strong. In the second quarter of 2026 the band sold $855 million, against $661 million a year earlier8, about 29%9, almost all from PAVBLU, the only EYLEA copy on sale in America10. PAVBLU is also the subject of a patent suit by Regeneron11.
The outlook depends on the next launches and on PAVBLU's exclusivity. A second American EYLEA copy would cut the band's growth sharply.
The line is really three businesses in different places. In the second quarter of 2026, $280 million of PAVBLU's $287 million was American, $129 million of AMJEVITA's $155 million and all $61 million of WEZLANA were sold abroad, and $106 million of MVASI's $153 million was American12. An American eye-drug copy, foreign immunology copies and older cancer copies have little in common but the word biosimilar.
This line is the least defended of the five. The verdict changes if the band falls below $2.5 billion in a year without a major new launch: that would show the business has no advantage beyond arriving first.
Up about 29% in Q2 2026 on PAVBLU.
The weight of the least defended line; rising while originals fall would lower the average margin.
