⚠ Amortisation: $4.3 Billion a YearModerate threat

Amgen (AMGN) — threat to the moat

Amgen reported $14.23 a share in 2025 and $21.84 on its own measure; the difference is mostly the cost of the drugs it bought.

Buying a drug turns its future profits into an intangible asset that is written off over its life, and Amgen's purchases now cost it billions a year in reported earnings. Amortisation of intangible assets was $3.2 billion in 2023, $4.8 billion in 2024 and $4.3 billion in 20251. On top of that, selling Horizon's stepped-up inventory added $2.4 billion to cost of sales in 2024 and $1.3 billion in 20252.

Amortisation of intangible assets ($bn)3.220234.820244.32025Amgen Form 10-K FY2025
A cost of the deals that recurs every year.

That is why Amgen's two earnings figures diverge so much. Diluted earnings per share were $14.23 on a GAAP basis in 2025 and $21.84 on the company's non-GAAP measure34. In its 2026 guidance, acquisition-related expenses account for $6.04 to $6.12 a share of the difference5.

Most analysts use the higher figure, and amortisation is a non-cash charge. But it represents cash already spent: Amgen paid $27.0 billion in net cash for Horizon alone6. Ignoring amortisation treats the purchase price as if it were free.

Impairments are the harsher version. Amgen recorded intangible impairments of $851 million in 2023, $159 million in 2024 and $1,200 million in 20257, the last mostly Otezla. TAVNEOS, carried at $2.4 billion8, is the next candidate.

The gap between the two earnings figures is the thing to follow. In 2025 it was $7.61 a share9. If it stays that wide as amortisation should be declining, it will be because new impairments are replacing the old charges, which would mean the acquisitions are losing value faster than they are being written off.
