Institutional SecuritiesNarrow moat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet
Morgan Stanley's investment bank earns 34% pre-tax in a good year and 19% in a bad one, and it is currently having a very good year.
Institutional Securities is Morgan Stanley's largest segment by revenue and the one that swings most. It earned net revenues of $33,080 million and pre-tax income of $11,237 million in 20251, a pre-tax margin of about 34%2.
The segment advises companies on mergers, underwrites their stock and bond issues, trades securities for institutions, finances hedge funds through prime brokerage, and lends to corporations3. It also books income from the Japanese securities joint venture with MUFG4.
It is paid in four streams. In 2025 investment banking earned $7,619 million, of which advisory $2,888 million, equity underwriting $1,965 million and fixed income underwriting $2,766 million; equity sales and trading earned $15,631 million, fixed income $8,716 million and other revenue $1,114 million5. Equity is the largest, about 47% of the segment6.
The history is a cycle. Revenue was $17,953 million in 2015, $20,582 million in 2018, $29,833 million in 2021, $24,393 million in 2022 and $23,060 million in 2023, each as reported789. It grew about 6.3% a year over the decade to 202510, the slowest of the three segments.
Profitability swings more than revenue. Pre-tax income was $11,814 million in 2021 and $4,476 million in 202311, a margin of about 40% falling to about 19%12, before recovering to 34%.
The latest quarter was exceptional. Revenue was $11,040 million and pre-tax income $4,262 million in the second quarter of 202613, with equity a record. The firm puts its share of the peer wallet at about 15.5% in 2025, from 14.3% in 202014.
The deal volumes behind the banking fees rose in 2025. The firm reports, using LSEG data, completed mergers of $756 billion against $655 billion in 2024, equity offerings of $79 billion against $63 billion and fixed income offerings of $414 billion against $326 billion15. In the second quarter of 2026 equity underwriting was $851 million against $500 million a year earlier, and fixed income underwriting $788 million against $532 million16.
The Other line is small but telling. It was $1,114 million in 202517 and a loss of $152 million in the second quarter of 2026 against a gain of $202 million a year earlier18. It carries the hedges on deferred compensation and the income from the Japanese joint venture19. In the first half of 2026 the segment earned revenue of $21,761 million against $16,626 million and pre-tax income of $8,423 million against $5,392 million20, pre-tax income up about 56%21.
The outlook depends on markets more than on Morgan Stanley. The segment is a narrow moat: strong in equities, competitive elsewhere. The number that would change the verdict is the pre-tax margin in the next weak year; above 25% would mean the franchise had become steadier than in 2023.
Revenue $23.1bn (2023) to $33.1bn (2025); $11.0bn in Q2 2026.
The size of the markets business; a fall of a third in a weak market would show how much of today is the cycle.
