⚠ A Fifth of the Deposits Are UninsuredLow threat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat

A fifth of Morgan Stanley's deposits, $84 billion, is above the insurance limit and could leave in a day.

Morgan Stanley's deposits come from brokerage clients, many of them wealthy, and some of the money sits above the insurance limit. Of $415,523 million of deposits at the end of 2025, $84,201 million were not subject to FDIC insurance1, about 20%2. Time deposits were $99,640 million3.

Four-fifths insured.

Uninsured money moves fastest in a scare. A wealthy client whose investments are already at the firm could move cash elsewhere with a single instruction.

The share is modest by the standard of a commercial bank, and the firm's liquidity is large. The larger point is that the deposit base depends on client confidence in the broker as much as the bank.

Time deposits, which cannot be withdrawn without penalty before maturity, were $99,640 million at the end of 20254, and $44,380 million of them mature in 20265. That maturity profile gives the firm some notice before a large part of the deposit base comes up for repricing.

The insured share rose slightly in 2025. Deposits subject to FDIC insurance were $298,351 million at the end of 2024 and $331,322 million at the end of 20256, while uninsured deposits rose to $84,201 million from $77,656 million7.

The uninsured share is disclosed each year. A rise toward a third would mean more of the funding was the kind that can leave in a day.
