Returning Capital: Seven Times the Dividend in a DecadeNarrow moat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet
Morgan Stanley's dividend is seven times what it was in 2015, and it now pays out about two-thirds of what it earns.
A franchise that needs less capital than it earns hands the rest back. Morgan Stanley declared dividends of $0.55 a share in 20151 and $3.85 in 20252, seven times as much3. It raised the quarterly dividend to $1.15 from $1.00 from the third quarter of 20264.
Buybacks run alongside. The firm bought back $9,865 million of stock in 2022, $5,300 million in 2023, $3,250 million in 2024 and $4,585 million in 202556, and reauthorised a $20 billion multi-year programme from the third quarter of 20267.
In 2025 dividends of $6,147 million and buybacks of $4,585 million came to about 66% of earnings available to common shareholders89. Common shares outstanding fell to 1,583 million at the end of 2025 from 1,607 million10, and to 1,572 million by June 202611.
The payout could be higher, and the excess capital suggests it will be. What limits it is the regulator's view of the stress buffer, discussed on its own page.
The quarterly dividend shows the path. It was $0.35 a share in the fourth quarter of 2020, $0.70 in 2021, $0.78 in 2022, $0.85 in 2023, $0.93 in 2024 and $1.00 in 202512, and it rises to $1.15 from the third quarter of 202613. The annual dividend yield was about 2.34% at the September 2026 price14.
The share count is the simplest measure of the return of capital. If it rose, with the firm issuing stock for another acquisition as it did for E*TRADE and Eaton Vance, that would say management preferred buying businesses to buying back its own.
Payout about 66% in 2025; $20bn buyback from Q3 2026.
The net return of capital; a rise would mean stock was being issued for deals rather than retired.
