Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat
In 2023 Morgan Stanley's wealth revenue rose and its profit fell, which is what fixed costs do when growth stalls.
Fixed costs lift margins when revenue grows and cut them when it stalls. Wealth Management showed the second half of that in 2023: net revenues rose to $26,268 million from $24,417 million, yet pre-tax income fell to $6,530 million from $6,583 million1. The margin dropped from 27.0% to 24.9%2.
That year carried charges. The firm booked severance of $353 million, an FDIC special assessment of $286 million and integration expenses of $293 million across the firm3. It was also the year clients moved cash out of low-paying sweep accounts, and the segment's net interest income fell the year after.
A margin built on fixed costs is only as good as the revenue beneath it. Net interest income in Wealth Management fell 10% in 20244 before recovering.
Across the firm, 2023 non-compensation expenses were $17,240 million5; by 2025 they were $19,126 million6. The costs kept rising through the weak year and the strong one. A business with a rising fixed-cost base needs rising revenue to keep its margin, which is the bet the wealth segment has been winning since 2023.
The 30% goal has been met in a strong market. A quarter in which wealth revenue fell and the margin dropped more than two points would show how much of the gain depended on the tide.
