Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat

Morgan Stanley's bond desk grew 3.5% in 2025 on a balance sheet that grew much faster.

Fixed income trading rewards whoever can hold the most risk for clients, and that is a contest decided by capital. Morgan Stanley's Standardized CET1 ratio was 15.0% at the end of 20251, and its Tier 1 leverage ratio 6.0% in June 20262.

More balance sheet for the same bond revenue.

The firm has been adding balance sheet. Total assets rose from $1,215,071 million at the end of 2024 to $1,675,057 million in June 202634, and much of it supports trading and financing.

A desk that grows only by adding balance sheet earns less on each dollar. Fixed income revenue grew about 3.5% in 20255, far slower than the assets beneath the firm.

The firm's supplementary leverage ratio was 4.9% in June 20266. That ratio counts all assets regardless of risk, and it is the constraint that binds a trading balance sheet first. A desk that needs more balance sheet to grow will meet that limit before it meets the risk-based ones.

Borrowings, which fund much of the trading balance sheet, rose to $348,935 million at the end of 2025 from $288,819 million a year earlier7, about 21%8. That is the money a fixed income desk consumes, and it costs more than a swept deposit.

If fixed income revenue stayed flat while the balance sheet kept growing, the desk would be consuming capital without earning a return on it. The desk's revenue next to total assets is the ratio to follow each year.
