A Pre-Tax Margin That Reached 30%Wide moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet

Morgan Stanley's wealth margin rose from about 23% to over 30% in five years, because the platform costs about the same at eight trillion dollars as at five.

Scale shows up in Wealth Management's pre-tax margin, which has risen for five years with one interruption. It was about 23.0% in 2020, 25.5% in 2021, 27.0% in 2022, 24.9% in 2023, 27.2% in 2024 and 29.3% in 20251, on pre-tax income of $9,293 million in 20252. In the second quarter of 2026 it was 30.5%3.

Five years of rising margins, with a dip in 2023.

The firm set 30% as a goal in its January 2026 strategic update4 and passed it within six months. Pre-tax income in the segment was $4,387 million in 20205; by 2025 it had more than doubled.

The margin rises because much of the cost is fixed. Technology, compliance, the bank and the E*TRADE platform cost roughly the same whether client assets are $5 trillion or $8 trillion, while fee revenue grows with the assets. Wealth Management net revenues were $19,086 million in 2020 and $31,754 million in 202567.

One comparison needs care. From 2026 the firm hedges advisers' deferred cash compensation with derivatives, so its mark-to-market no longer runs through Wealth Management revenue; the second quarter of 2025 had included $294 million of such gains8.

The margin also rose because the segment's costs grew slower than its revenue in 2025. Wealth Management revenue rose to $31,754 million from $28,420 million, about 12%, while pre-tax income rose to $9,293 million from $7,740 million, about 20%910. In the second quarter of 2026 the segment's pre-tax income was $2,697 million on revenue of $8,856 million11.

The margin is the cleanest test of scale in this business. Holding above 30% through a year of flat markets would show the operating leverage was structural; a slide back toward 25%, as in 2023, would show it was mostly the market.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Pre-tax margin 23% (2020) to 30.5% (Q2 2026).

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Wealth Management pre-tax margin, latest quarter
30.5% (Q2 2026) vs 29.3% for 2025

The payoff from scale; a year back near 25% in flat markets would say the leverage was cyclical.
