⚠ Buying Back at Twice the PriceLow threat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat

Morgan Stanley paid $197.64 a share for its latest buybacks, 2.3 times the 2023 price.

Buybacks create value only when the price is right, and Morgan Stanley is now buying at much higher prices. It repurchased 62 million shares at an average $85.35 in 2023, 33 million at $99.16 in 2024 and 32 million at $141.33 in 20251. In the second quarter of 2026 it bought 8 million shares at an average $197.642.

Each dollar buys fewer shares.

That is about 2.3 times the 2023 price3. The same dollars retire fewer than half as many shares.

The shares trade at about 3.69 times tangible book value4. At that price a buyback returns cash to sellers at a large premium to the capital behind each share.

The 2022 programme was the most productive: the firm bought 113 million shares at an average $87.25 for $9,865 million5. The 2025 programme bought 32 million shares for $4,585 million6. Each year the same dollars retire fewer shares as the price rises.

None of this makes the buyback a mistake; earnings rose too. But the new $20 billion programme7 will be spent at prices well above those that made the old one so productive. The average repurchase price relative to tangible book value per share, $53.18 in June 20268, is the ratio to follow.
