Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat
Morgan Stanley's wealth story is real, but 58% of its profit in the latest quarter still came from trading and banking.
Morgan Stanley's story is the shift to wealth, but the profit mix has not finished shifting. Institutional Securities earned $11,237 million of pre-tax income in 2025, about 51% of the firm's total12. In the second quarter of 2026 it earned $4,262 million of $7,348 million, about 58%34.
That share rises in strong markets and falls in weak ones. In 2023, a poor year for trading and deals, Institutional Securities earned $4,476 million, and Wealth and Investment Management together earned $7,372 million56. In the good years the order reverses.
The second quarter of 2026 was a trading quarter. Institutional Securities revenue rose about 44% from a year earlier, equity revenue 69% and investment banking 58%78. The chief executive said "Active markets and consistent execution across all three regions drove exceptional results"9.
The risk is that the market values the whole firm on a mix that is temporarily favourable. ROTCE of 26.6% in the quarter10 was earned with trading at a record.
The trading exposure is visible in the firm's own risk statements. It warns that concentration of risk "may reduce revenues or result in losses in our market-making, investing, underwriting (including block trading) and lending businesses (including margin lending)"11. In 2023, the last weak year, the firm's pre-tax margin was 22%12, against 31% in 2025.
The pattern held across the first half of 2026. Institutional Securities earned $8,423 million of the firm's $14,359 million of pre-tax income, about 59%1314. A year earlier the share was about 53%15. The wealth business grew in both periods; the trading business simply grew faster.
The share of pre-tax income from Institutional Securities is the measure. It will fall when markets cool; if it fell below 40% and firm ROTCE stayed above 18%, the wealth business would have proved it could carry the firm on its own.
How much of the profit still depends on markets; a fall below 40% with ROTCE above 18% would show wealth could carry the firm.
