✦ Parametric and Tax-Efficient InvestingNarrow moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — the future bets

Parametric's assets grew 56% in two years because it gives rich clients tax savings that an index fund cannot, at fees almost as low.

Parametric, which came with Eaton Vance, builds customised index portfolios that let wealthy clients harvest tax losses and hold their own securities. Its long-term assets under management were $336 billion in 2023, $423 billion in 2024 and $524 billion in 20251, up about 56% in two years2. The firm puts Parametric assets at about $355 billion in 2020 and about $685 billion in 2025 on its own broader measure3.

Fast growth at low fees.

The product is tax efficiency, which an ordinary index fund cannot offer in the same way. It is also cheap: Parametric's long-term products "generally have lower average fee rates than other Alternatives and Solutions products"4.

That makes it a defensive bet. It keeps clients who might otherwise move to a plain index fund, and it does so inside the wealth channel, where the adviser is still paid. The firm lists "Tax-Efficient Investing" among its growth opportunities5.

The cost is visible in Investment Management's economics. Revenue grew about 16% in fee terms from 2023 to 20256, slower than Parametric's assets.

Parametric sits inside the Alternatives and Solutions category, which is why the firm reports its assets separately: its long-term assets were $524 billion at the end of 20257, a large part of the category. Its growth is the main reason Investment Management's assets have grown faster than its fees.

Everything turns on the fee rate. If Investment Management's fee revenue keeps growing well behind its assets, the fastest-growing product is diluting the business it was bought to strengthen.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Parametric long-term AUM $336bn (2023) to $524bn (2025).
