⚠ Households Barely GrewLow threat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat
E*TRADE's assets rose 16% in 2025 and its households 2%, so the funnel is filling mostly from the market.
The E*TRADE channel's assets grew much faster than its client count. Self-directed households were 8.3 million at the end of 2024 and 8.5 million at the end of 20251, a rise of about 2.4%2. Self-directed assets rose about 16% in the same year3.
Most of that gap is markets: existing customers' portfolios rose. It means the channel is not yet adding clients at the rate its assets suggest, and a funnel's value depends on how many new people enter it.
Households were 8.7 million in June 20264, so growth continued at a modest pace.
Trading activity rose much faster than the client count. Daily average revenue trades were 759 thousand in 2023 and 1,029 thousand in 20255, while households rose only to 8.5 million from 8.3 million in the last of those years6. Existing customers were trading more; far fewer new ones were arriving.
A funnel that fills mainly from the market is only as full as the market. Households will be reported every quarter; a year of no growth would mean E*TRADE had stopped attracting new investors and was living off the ones it had in 2020.
