✦ Beyond Ten Trillion DollarsNarrow moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — the future bets

Morgan Stanley reached ten trillion dollars of client assets, doubling in five and a half years, and now has to say what comes next.

Morgan Stanley's headline goal was client assets of "$10 Trillion +" across Wealth and Investment Management1. It reached "the $10 trillion milestone" in the second quarter of 20262, up from $9,276 billion at the end of 20253 and about $4.8 trillion in 20204.

Doubled in five and a half years.

Doubling in about five and a half years came from three sources: acquisitions, net new assets and markets. E*TRADE and Eaton Vance brought whole books of assets. Net new assets in Wealth Management totalled about $1.64 trillion over 2021 to 20255. And markets did the rest.

The next leg cannot rely on acquisitions of that size without issuing stock, and the firm has been retiring shares instead. That leaves flows and markets.

The number itself is a milestone, not a moat. What matters is what is charged on it: Wealth Management asset management revenue of $5,261 million in the second quarter of 20266 is the part of the ten trillion that pays every quarter.

The composition matters as much as the total. At the end of 2025 Wealth Management held $7,381 billion and Investment Management's assets under management were $1,895 billion78, with about $350 billion counted in both9. The fee rate on the wealth assets is higher, so the next trillion is worth more if it lands there.

Total client assets rose to $9,276 billion at the end of 2025 from $7,860 billion a year earlier10, about 18% in a year11. A second year like that would take the total well past eleven trillion, which is why the firm framed its goal as ten trillion and more rather than a ceiling.

The next goal is the thing to wait for. If the firm sets one well above ten trillion, it is signalling confidence in flows; if the total stalls near ten trillion through a flat market, the growth of the past five years will be shown to have been mostly the tide.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Client assets $4.8tn (2020) to $10tn (Q2 2026).

The headline scale; a stall near ten trillion in a flat market would show how much of the growth was the tide.
