⚠ Rates Pay a Quarter of the Wealth RevenueLow threat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat
A quarter of Morgan Stanley's wealth revenue is a spread on client cash that shrinks when rates fall.
About a quarter of Wealth Management's revenue is not a fee at all but a spread on client cash and loans. Net interest income in the segment was $7,911 million in 20251, about 24.9% of its revenue2. It was $5,393 million in 2021, $8,118 million in 2023 and $7,313 million in 202434.
That line moves with interest rates and with client behaviour. When rates rose, clients moved cash from sweep accounts into higher-paying products, and the segment's period-average cost of deposits went from 0.53% in 2022 to 3.05% in 202456.
The firm publishes the sensitivity. A 100 basis point fall in rates would reduce Wealth Management net interest income over the next twelve months by $244 million, and a 200 basis point fall by $542 million, measured at the end of 20257. The exposure was larger a year earlier, $803 million for a 200 basis point fall8.
Firmwide net interest income was $3,093 million in 2015, $9,327 million in 2022, $8,230 million in 2023, $8,611 million in 2024 and $10,046 million in 20259. The tripling since 2015 came from the bank deposits the wealth business gathered; the 2023 dip came when clients moved cash into higher-paying products.
This is a manageable risk, not a hidden one. The segment's net interest income was $2,254 million in the second quarter of 202610; a decline of more than 10% while rates were cut would mean the deposit spread was compressing faster than the sensitivity table implies.
