The MoatNarrow moat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet
Morgan Stanley owns a wide wealth moat and a narrow investment bank, and its returns now depend more on the first than the second.
Morgan Stanley's moat is two moats of different widths. The wealth business is wide: $8,084 billion of Wealth Management client assets in June 20261, fees charged on most of it, advisers tied by loans, and a pre-tax margin that reached 30.5% in the second quarter of 20262. The institutional business is narrow: a strong franchise with about 15.5% of its peers' wallet by its own estimate3, but a margin that fell to about 19% in 20234.
For a bank the test of a moat is return on tangible common equity. Morgan Stanley's was 21.6% in 20255, against an assumed 10% cost of equity, the hurdle this app uses for JPMorgan and Bank of America. Its five-year average for 2021 to 2025 was 17.6%, against 12.1% for the five years before6.
The rise came from the mix. In 2015 Wealth and Investment Management earned about 49% of segment revenue7; by 2023, a weak year for trading, they earned about 58%8. The acquisitions of E*TRADE and Eaton Vance, about $20.6 billion together9, bought much of that shift. The regulator noticed, cutting the stress capital buffer to 4.3%10.
Two things keep the verdict at narrow for the firm as a whole. Institutional Securities still earned about 51% of pre-tax income in 202511, and it swings with markets. And much of the wealth growth is market appreciation.
The moat also shows up in how little capital the firm needs to grow. Book value per share was $64.37 and tangible book value per share $50.00 at the end of 202512, against $58.98 and $44.57 a year earlier13. Tangible book rose about 12%14 in a year in which the firm also paid $6,147 million of dividends and bought back $4,585 million of stock15.
Profit has grown far faster than the capital behind it. Net income applicable to Morgan Stanley was $6,127 million in 201516 and $16,861 million in 202517, up about 175%, while shareholders' equity rose from $75,182 million to $111,632 million, about 48%181920. A business that earns much more on only somewhat more capital is showing the economics of a moat, whatever the headline multiple says.
The verdict is a narrow moat, widening: wide in wealth, narrow in trading, and a mix moving toward wealth. The figure that would change it is ROTCE through a downturn; an average above 15% across the next weak year would justify calling the whole firm wide.
ROTCE 12.8% (2023) to 21.6% (2025) to 26.6% (Q2 2026).
The return the whole firm earns over its cost of equity; two years back near 13% would mean the wealth shift had not changed the economics.
