Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat

E*TRADE's trading revenue is a mood indicator, and in 2022 the mood cut wealth transactional revenue by two-fifths.

The self-directed business is paid partly by activity, and activity is a mood. Wealth Management's transactional revenue, which includes commissions and trading, fell from $4,259 million in 2021 to $2,473 million in 20221, and was $4,588 million in 20252.

A 42% drop in one year.

The trading count has risen for three years. Daily average revenue trades rose about 23% in 2025 and another 24% by the second quarter of 20263. Those were years of rising markets and heavy retail interest.

The firm reads it the same way. It says its results may be materially affected by market fluctuations and by conditions in global financial markets4.

The quarter bears it out. Wealth Management transactional revenue was $1,167 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $1,264 million a year earlier5, although the earlier quarter included $294 million of gains on deferred compensation hedges6. Stripped of that, activity revenue rose even in a quarter when trades were at a record.

None of this undermines the channel's purpose, which is to gather assets. It means the commissions are not a moat. A fall in daily trades by a third while self-directed assets held steady would show the true size of the activity-driven revenue, and how much of the recent growth was the season.
