Goldman Sachs: The Head-On RivalNarrow moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet

Morgan Stanley meets Goldman Sachs in every deal, but it no longer needs to win every deal, because half its profit comes from wealth.

Goldman Sachs is the rival Morgan Stanley meets in every mandate. It is one of the seven peers, with Bank of America, Barclays, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan and UBS, against which Morgan Stanley measures its share of the investment banking and markets wallet1. Against that group Morgan Stanley's share rose from 14.3% in 2020 to about 15.5% in 2025, by its own estimate2.

About a point gained in five years.

This is a contest of relationships, balance sheet and people. Morgan Stanley's Institutional Securities segment earned net revenues of $33,080 million in 20253, with equity sales and trading at $15,631 million, fixed income at $8,716 million and investment banking at $7,619 million4. Its equity desk is where it has been winning, with record revenues in 2025 and again in the second quarter of 202656.

What separates the two firms in the market's eyes is what sits beside the investment bank. Morgan Stanley was worth $308.32 billion in September 2026 and Goldman Sachs $283.50 billion78; Morgan Stanley's Wealth Management segment alone earned $31,754 million of revenue in 20259.

That means the rivalry is narrower than it looks. Morgan Stanley can lose a league-table position and still grow its profit, because half its pre-tax income comes from elsewhere.

The equity desk is where the contest has been decided lately. Morgan Stanley's equity revenue rose 28% in 202510 and 69% in the second quarter of 202611. Its investment banking revenue in the quarter was $2,437 million, up 58%12, in a market that rewarded every large dealer.

In the second quarter of 2026 Morgan Stanley's Institutional Securities pre-tax income roughly doubled, to $4,262 million from $2,111 million13. A year like that lifts every large dealer; the question the wallet share answers is whether Morgan Stanley took more than its share of the pool, and its own estimate says it did, modestly14.

The wallet share is the scoreboard. A move back toward 14% would say Goldman and the other peers were winning the mandates, whatever the wealth business did.
