The Institutional FranchiseNarrow moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet

Morgan Stanley's investment bank more than doubled its profit in two years, and its margin still swings from 19% to 34% with the market.

Institutional Securities is the half of Morgan Stanley that the name still describes: investment banking, sales and trading, prime brokerage and lending to institutions. It earned net revenues of $33,080 million and pre-tax income of $11,237 million in 20251, about 51% of the firm's pre-tax income2.

From 40% to 19% and back to 34%.

The business is paid in three ways. Investment banking fees were $7,619 million in 2025, equity sales and trading $15,631 million and fixed income $8,716 million3. The equity line is the biggest, and much of it is financing income from prime brokerage.

Its moat is narrower than the wealth business, because it depends on relationships, balance sheet and people, all of which rivals can buy. The evidence of strength is share: Morgan Stanley's share of the investment banking and markets wallet against its peers rose from 14.3% in 2020 to about 15.5% in 2025, by its own estimate4.

The evidence of cyclicality is the margin. Institutional Securities earned a pre-tax margin of about 40% in 2021, about 19% in 2023 and 34% in 20255. Pre-tax income more than doubled from $4,476 million in 2023 to $11,237 million in 20256, and the second quarter of 2026 produced $4,262 million on revenue of $11,040 million7.

The segment's regional spread is wider than the firm's. Its strategic update shows Institutional Securities revenue split about 52%, 22% and 26% across the Americas, Asia and EMEA in 20258. Net income in the segment was $8,650 million in 2025 against $3,453 million in 20239, a swing of more than $5 billion in two years.

The first half of 2026 shows how strong the current run is. Institutional Securities earned revenue of $21,761 million against $16,626 million a year earlier, and pre-tax income of $8,423 million against $5,392 million10. In the second quarter alone pre-tax income roughly doubled, to $4,262 million from $2,111 million11.

The verdict is a narrow moat in a business that is currently winning. The number to follow is the pre-tax margin across a full cycle: an average near 30% through the next downturn would mean the franchise had become steadier, while a return to 2023's 19% would mean it had not.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Wallet share up about a point since 2020; pre-tax income $4.5bn (2023) to $11.2bn (2025).
