◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
KLA (KLAC) — the variant view
The market cut KLA's value by 38% in three months while its backlog was up 60% on the year, pricing a peak the order book does not yet show.
📈 KLAC valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market took 38% off KLA's value between June and September 2026, while the order book it reports grew 60% in the year to June. At the fiscal year-end the market value was $394.1 billion1; on 25 September it was $245.24 billion2. Over the same year the backlog rose from $7.86 billion to $12.57 billion3, 59.9%4.
The multiple came down with the price. It was 81.58 times earnings at the year-end5 and 51.3 times trailing earnings in September, with a forward multiple of 34.456. Analysts expect fiscal 2027 revenue of $18.11 billion and earnings of $5.45 a share7.
What the market may be underweighting is how much of that forecast is already ordered. The backlog equals 93% of fiscal 2026 revenue8. If it converts on the schedule implied by the $4.0 billion September-quarter guide9, the consensus is not a stretch.
What the market may be right to weigh is the kind of backlog it is. The binding figure, KLA's remaining performance obligations, is $1,775.1 million10; the rest is written customer requests that customers can reshape. And cash lagged profit in fiscal 2026: operating cash flow of $4,143.1 million against net income of $4,830.8 million11. At the September price the free cash flow yield is about 1.5%12.
The market has swung before. KLA's market value at calendar year-ends went from $65.21 billion in 2021 to $53.43 billion in 2022 and $79.02 billion in 202313. Those were years of rising revenue; the price moved on the expected cycle, not the reported one. The July 2026 fall fits that history better than it fits any change in the business.
The view that reconciles these is a timing one. A July collapse with a rising backlog means the market is pricing a peak that the order book does not yet show. Fiscal 2027 revenue at or above the $18.11 billion consensus, with operating cash flow back above 95% of net income, would mean the market sold the wrong thing.
