Refurbished Tools and UpgradesNarrow moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
KLA rebuilds and resells its old tools, which keeps it in the mature fabs, but that line has shrunk by about 60% in three years.
KLA earns money from its tools even after the first owner is done with them. The product category it calls Other "includes primarily refurbished systems, remanufactured legacy systems, and enhancements and upgrades for previous-generation products"1. It was $153.1 million in fiscal 20262.
Rebuilding its own old tools keeps KLA inside the fabs that run older nodes. A chipmaker making power chips or sensors on mature processes does not need the newest inspection tool, and KLA would rather sell it a rebuilt one than leave the job to a broker.
The line has shrunk. Other was $381.1 million in fiscal 2023 and $153.1 million in fiscal 202634, a fall of about 60%5, and it was 1.1% of fiscal 2026 revenue6. KLA does not explain the fall in the 10-K, and the reason could be anything from fewer tools coming back to more of them being sold as new-generation upgrades inside the main categories.
This is a small part of the installed-base advantage rather than a pillar of it. Its value is that the fleet keeps paying after the first sale.
The line's peak came in fiscal 2023, the year KLA's revenue reached $10,496.1 million before the downturn7. Other rose 46.9% that year8, then fell three years running. The pattern suggests that upgrades and rebuilt tools are bought most when customers are adding capacity quickly, not as a steady annuity.
The line was larger before its fall. Other was $232.0 million in fiscal 20199 and $259.4 million in fiscal 202210, and at its fiscal 2023 peak it was 3.6% of revenue11. Its size has always tracked how fast customers were adding capacity.
In fiscal 2026 it was one of only two product categories to shrink, the other being Specialty Semiconductor Process products, which fell to $502.5 million from $517.2 million12.
In fiscal 2021 the category was $206.4 million13, so its recent level is below where it stood five years ago.
If the line kept falling toward zero while service grew, it would mean the older fleet was being retired rather than recycled, and KLA's hold on mature fabs would rest on service alone.
Other fell from $381.1M in FY2023 to $153.1M in FY2026.
The second life of the fleet; a continued fall while service grows would mean old tools are being retired, not rebuilt.
