Research at Eleven Percent of RevenueWide moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
KLA spends $1.5 billion a year on research, nearly three times what it spent in 2015, and spreads it across revenue that grew almost five times.
KLA keeps its lead by outspending the problem. Research and development expense was $1,532.1 million in fiscal 2026, up 13%1, and 2.9 times the $530.6 million of fiscal 201523. The 10-K attributes the latest rise mainly to $124.8 million more in employee costs and $36.0 million more in engineering project materials4.
The ratio has fallen while the dollars rose. Research was 18.9% of revenue in fiscal 2015 and 11.3% in fiscal 20265; the 10-K rounds the last three years to 11%, 11% and 13%6. That is scale doing its work: the same research programme is spread over revenue that grew 4.8 times7.
People make up most of it. About 27% of KLA's roughly 17,000 employees work in research and development8, around 4,600 people9, in centres in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, China, Singapore and Israel10.
This is the part of the moat a rival has to match. A company trying to enter process control would need a comparable research staff before it sold its first tool, and it would be spending that money against a much smaller revenue base.
Research is not KLA's only large operating cost. Selling, general and administrative expense was $1,131.5 million in fiscal 202611, 8.3% of revenue12. Together with research that is under 20% of revenue, a low cost of staying in front for a company whose gross margin is 61.3%13.
The spending rose fastest in the build-out years. Research went from $863.9 million in fiscal 2020 to $1,296.7 million in fiscal 202314, half as much again in three years15, as KLA prepared tools for the nodes now in production. The payoff arrives years later, which is why research cut in a slow year can cost more than it saves.
Research that stops growing is where a lead starts to erode. It fell twice in the period, in fiscal 2016 and by 1.4% in fiscal 20241617. If it fell again in a year of growing revenue, KLA would be harvesting the lead rather than extending it.
R&D +13% in FY2026, to $1,532.1M.
The price of staying the reference; a fall in a year of growing revenue would mean the lead is being harvested.
