The Capital MachineNarrow moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

KLA hands back about nine-tenths of its free cash flow, which has cut its share count by a fifth since 2015.

KLA's fourth advantage is financial discipline, and it is narrow because it depends on the other three. The business throws off cash: operating cash flow was $4,143.1 million in fiscal 2026 and capital spending only $375.9 million1, leaving free cash flow of $3,767.1 million2. KLA returned $3,347.6 million of it3, 88.9%4, and says it now targets "over 90% of free cash flow"5.

Returns took 89% of free cash flow.

The machine has run for a decade. From fiscal 2015 to 2026 KLA bought back $15.33 billion of stock and paid $9.79 billion of dividends67. The diluted share count fell 19.4%8, and the dividend has been raised seventeen years in a row9.

Capital spending is light because KLA's tools are built in factories that cost little next to the revenue they support: capital spending was 2.8% of revenue in fiscal 202610.

The pages below take the parts: the share count on Nineteen Percent Fewer Shares; the dividend on Seventeen Dividend Raises; the debt on Borrowed to Return; and the return on equity on An Eighty-Seven Percent Return on Equity.

This is a strength an owner can see in the per-share figures. Diluted earnings a share rose from $0.224 in fiscal 2015 to $3.66 in fiscal 2026, adjusted for the June 2026 split1112.

Buybacks have cut the count even with stock-based pay running. Diluted shares fell 1.3% in fiscal 2026, from 1,337.5 million to 1,319.6 million13, on $2,289.8 million of repurchases14. At the September 2026 price the same spending would buy about 12.2 million shares15, just under 1% of the count.

Capital spending has grown with the business but stayed small. It was $45.8 million in fiscal 201516 and $375.9 million in fiscal 202617, about eight times more18, while operating cash flow went from $605.9 million to $4,143.1 million1920. A business that needs so little new plant can return nearly all its cash and still grow.

The risk is the price paid. KLA's buybacks follow cash flow, not value, and in June 2026 it bought at an average of $227.3521. The machine would be failing if returns rose above free cash flow in a year of falling revenue, borrowed rather than earned.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Returns 88.9% of free cash flow in FY2026; target raised to over 90%.

The number that tests this moat
Moat Explorer calc
Capital returns as a share of free cash flow, full year
88.9% (FY2026: $3,347.6M of $3,767.1M)

The discipline in one ratio; above 100% in a year of falling revenue would mean returns were being borrowed.

How it's calculated: Buybacks plus dividends divided by free cash flow (operating cash flow less capital spending), KLA Q4 FY2026 results release.
