ASML: The Supplier-Sized Rival Next DoorNarrow moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

ASML, named as a competitor in KLA's 10-K, is 2.7 times KLA's size and makes the machines whose patterns KLA's patterning tools check.

ASML is the competitor that reminds KLA it is not the largest specialist in the fab. KLA's 10-K lists ASML Holding among its named competitors1, and on 25 September 2026 ASML was worth $656.33 billion2, 2.7 times KLA3.

ASML is worth 2.7 times KLA.

The two meet where patterning is checked. KLA's Patterning line, $2,706.8 million in fiscal 20264, sits in the same process control segment as wafer inspection5, and ASML's lithography machines print the patterns6. A company that prints a pattern has an interest in measuring it, and ASML has the balance sheet to try.

The relationship is closer to coexistence than to head-on rivalry. KLA's patterning revenue has grown from $1,161.3 million in fiscal 20197, about 12.9% a year8, which is not the record of a line being displaced.

The risk is concentration of trust. A chipmaker that already depends on ASML for the most important machine in the fab may be willing to take the measurement from the same supplier, and ASML's own pages in this app explain why its customers have no alternative for that machine.

KLA's own patterning history shows how that line behaves when customers pause. It fell 26.4% in fiscal 2024 while wafer inspection held level9, then recovered by 23.2% in fiscal 202610. Nothing in the filings attributes the fall to ASML; it coincided with KLA's one downturn. The concern is prospective, not a trend the numbers yet show.

ASML's reach goes beyond printing. A third-party review of its competitors describes it as the only supplier of EUV lithography tools and says it dominates lithography11, and ASML's own site lists metrology and inspection among its products12. That is the ground KLA's patterning tools occupy, which is why ASML sits on KLA's list of rivals rather than only beside it.

Lam Research, at $393.13 billion, is also worth more than KLA13, but it is not on the 10-K's list of competitors14.

Patterning is the line to read. It fell 26.4% in fiscal 2024 and rose 23.2% in fiscal 202615. A year in which it fell while wafer inspection grew would suggest the measurement was moving to the company that makes the printer.
