Sixty-Four Percent Through the CycleWide moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
KLA's process control margin held between 63.5% and 65.2% through booms and a downturn, which is what pricing power looks like in an equipment maker's accounts.
The best evidence of pricing power in KLA's accounts is a margin that stays put. The Semiconductor Process Control segment earned a gross margin of 64.8% in fiscal 2018, 63.5% in fiscal 2019 and 65.2% in fiscal 2022123. In fiscal 2024, the one year since 2015 in which KLA's total revenue fell, the segment's margin was 64.5%45. In fiscal 2026 it was 63.6%6.
That steadiness is unusual for equipment. When customers cut orders, a toolmaker normally gives away price to keep its factories loaded, and the margin shows it. KLA's segment revenue fell from $9,324.2 million in fiscal 2023 to $8,733.6 million in fiscal 20247, and gross profit fell with it, from $5,957.6 million to $5,629.3 million8, but the rate did not break.
The reason is what the tools do. An inspection or metrology tool tells a chipmaker whether a process step worked. A fab running a new node cannot ship without that answer, so the tool is bought for what it protects rather than for its own price.
The company-wide gross margin tells the same story at a lower level, because the other two segments earn less. It was 61.3% in fiscal 20269, against about 50% at Lam Research, which makes the process tools KLA inspects10.
The company gross margin has climbed more slowly. It was 56.8% in fiscal 2015 and 59.1% in fiscal 201911, and it dipped when the Orbotech businesses, with lower margins, were added. It has risen in each of the last three years, to 61.3%12, as those businesses shrank as a share of the whole.
KLA's other segments show what a margin without that protection looks like. Specialty Semiconductor Process earned a gross margin of 55.7% in fiscal 2020 and 47.7% in fiscal 2026, and PCB and Component Inspection moved between 28.8% and 51.3% over three years13. Neither held its rate through the cycle; process control did.
The margin has one visible pressure. The 10-K's bridge from 60.9% to 61.3% shows mix costing 0.2 points and higher installation, warranty and tariff costs another 0.114. If the segment's gross margin fell below 62% in a year of rising revenue, the pricing would be what had slipped.
63.6% in FY2026, inside the nine-year range.
The price KLA holds across all three segments; a fall in a year of rising revenue would show pricing slipping.
