Packaging: A New Place to InspectNarrow moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

Stacked AI chips created a new inspection problem, and KLA says it took first place in it, with packaging revenue heading from $635 million to about $1 billion.

The newest source of process control demand is not the wafer but the package. AI processors are built by stacking memory beside logic and bonding them together, and every bond is a new place for a defect. On the third-quarter fiscal 2026 call management expected advanced packaging revenue to rise from approximately $635 million in 2025 to approximately $1 billion in 20261.

Expected to rise by more than half in a year.

KLA says it is winning there. The same call claimed a "#1 position in process control for advanced wafer level packaging for 2025" and a 14 percentage point share gain2. As with the headline share figure, these are KLA's own statements.

The filings show the demand in two segments at once. The 10-K credits process control's 12% growth in fiscal 2026 partly to "strong customer adoption of our advanced packaging products"3, and PCB and Component Inspection's 21% growth to "customers investing in advanced packaging technologies"4. That segment's revenue was $241.1 million in the June 2026 quarter, up 56.5% from a year earlier56.

Packaging matters to the moat because it is a new problem. Inspection lead in wafers was built over decades; in packaging the contest is recent, and a lead won now is a lead on the next decade of chip designs.

The segment most exposed to packaging recovered fast in fiscal 2026. PCB and Component Inspection revenue rose to $750.4 million from $621.7 million7, and its gross margin reached 51.3% after 28.8% in fiscal 20248. Some of that recovery is the end of display, whose losses no longer dilute the segment; some is packaging demand.

The June 2026 quarter put the two segments side by side. Process control revenue was $3,256.8 million, up 13.2% from a year earlier910, while PCB and Component Inspection grew more than four times as fast. Packaging demand is most visible in the smaller segment because its base is small enough for new orders to move it.

The billion-dollar figure is a calendar-year estimate given on a call. If KLA's next description of packaging revenue falls short of it, or stops being given, the new market is growing more slowly than the claim.
