✦ Advanced Packaging: Toward a Billion DollarsNarrow moat
KLA (KLAC) — the future bets
KLA expects advanced packaging revenue to rise from about $635 million to about $1 billion in a year, a new market it says it leads.
The fastest-growing market KLA names is the package, not the wafer. On the March 2026 call management expected advanced packaging revenue to rise from approximately $635 million in 2025 to approximately $1 billion in 20261, and claimed a "#1 position in process control for advanced wafer level packaging for 2025"2.
The demand shows up in the filings. The 10-K credits advanced packaging with part of process control's 12% growth in fiscal 2026 and with PCB and Component Inspection's 21% growth3. The latter segment's revenue rose 56.5% in the June 2026 quarter to $241.1 million45.
The bet is that packaging becomes like wafer fabrication: complex enough that every step needs checking. AI processors are built by bonding logic and memory together, and each bond is a new point of failure.
The scale is still small. About $1 billion would be roughly 7% of fiscal 2026 revenue6. The moat case for it is on Packaging: A New Place to Inspect; this page is the forecast.
Packaging also pulls KLA into businesses it bought rather than built. The PCB and Component Inspection segment, an Orbotech business, credits its fiscal 2026 growth partly to "customers investing in advanced packaging technologies"7, and its segment profit turned from a $281.2 million loss to a $108.0 million profit8. The bet on packaging is also a bet that the Orbotech purchase can finally earn its keep.
KLA is paying for the bet inside the segment that has to earn it. PCB and Component Inspection spent $130.2 million on research in fiscal 20269, about 17% of its revenue10, against 11% for the company as a whole11.
The segment's profit is still thin against that spending. Its segment profit of $108.0 million in fiscal 202612 was 14.4% of revenue13, against 44.8% in process control14.
The number to check is the next one management gives. If calendar 2026 packaging revenue is reported at or above $1 billion, the bet is on track; a figure near $800 million would say the market is growing more slowly than KLA expected.
PCB and Component Inspection +56.5% y/y in Q4 FY2026.
The size of the new market; a result near $800M would say packaging is growing more slowly than expected.
