One Segment Earns Ninety-Seven PercentWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

Nine-tenths of KLA's revenue and ninety-seven percent of its segment profit come from one business, process control.

KLA is three businesses on paper and one in the profits. Under the segment measure it has used since fiscal 2025, Semiconductor Process Control earned $5,482.8 million of segment profit in fiscal 2026, Specialty Semiconductor Process $64.6 million and PCB and Component Inspection $108.0 million1. Process control was 96.9% of the total2.

Almost all of it from process control.

The margins explain it. Process control's segment profit was 44.8% of its revenue; the other two earned 11.1% and 14.4%3. Segment profit here is after research, selling and administrative costs and amortisation, so these are close to operating margins.

The concentration is the result of a purchase rather than a plan to diversify badly. The two smaller segments came with Orbotech, bought in February 2019 for approximately $3.26 billion4, and they are argued on Orbotech's Price below and on the revenue-line pages for each business.

What it means for an owner is that KLA's earnings power is the process control franchise and nothing else. The research budget follows the profit: of $1,532.1 million of research and development in fiscal 2026, the process control segment accounted for $1,341.3 million5.

Under the older segment measure, gross profit, the picture was the same. In fiscal 2024 the process control segment's gross profit was $5,629.3 million on revenue of $8,733.6 million, while the other two earned $282.9 million and $159.0 million6. Whichever measure is used, the process control segment is almost the whole company.

The smaller segments also spend heavily for what they earn. Specialty Semiconductor Process spent $59.4 million on research in fiscal 2026 and PCB and Component Inspection $130.2 million7, roughly a dollar of research for each dollar of their segment profit8. In process control, research of $1,341.3 million supported $5,482.8 million of profit9.

Focus is a strength when the franchise is strong. The share of segment profit that comes from process control is worth watching in both directions: below 90% would mean either that the smaller businesses had finally found a profit or that the core had weakened, and the segment note says which.
