The Process Control FranchiseWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

KLA does not make the tools that build chips; it makes the tools that decide whether those tools worked, and that position has held a 64% gross margin for nine years.

KLA's moat is that it is the referee of the fab. Its own description is "a leading supplier of process control and yield management solutions and services"1: inspection tools that find defects and metrology tools that measure what was made. Every other tool in a fab deposits, etches or patterns; KLA's tools decide whether that work can be trusted.

Down 8% in the one bad year, then up 46% in two.

That position is worth more than its share of spending suggests. A chipmaker starting a new node is running processes that do not yet work reliably, and the time it takes to find and fix defects is the time before it can sell chips. The tool that shortens that time is bought for what it protects.

The results show a franchise with pricing power. Semiconductor Process Control brought in $12,244.7 million in fiscal 2026 and earned $5,482.8 million of segment profit2, a margin of 44.8%3. Its gross margin has stayed between 63.5% and 65.2% for nine years4.

Four pages below argue the parts. KLA's claim to be about seven times its nearest rival is examined on A Claim of Seven Times; the margin's steadiness on Sixty-Four Percent Through the Cycle; the concentration of profit on One Segment Earns Ninety-Seven Percent; and the newest market, packaging, on Packaging: A New Place to Inspect.

The franchise has held for decades. KLA was formed in April 1997 by merging KLA Instruments and Tencor Instruments, businesses that began operations in 1975 and 19765, and the name has changed since but the focus has not.

Rivals exist and some are larger. The 10-K names Applied Materials, ASML, Hitachi High-Tech, Lasertec and Onto Innovation6, and Applied Materials argues on its own pages that selling both the process tool and the inspection tool shortens a customer's learning. KLA's answer is neutrality: in leading-edge wafer fabs it does not make the deposition and etch tools it inspects; its own process tools, bought with Orbotech, serve specialty chips.

The franchise has had one leader for two decades. Rick Wallace has been chief executive since January 2006 and president since November 2008, and joined KLA Instruments in 1988 as an applications engineer7. The chief financial officer, Bren Higgins, has held the role since August 20138. The same two people have run the company through every year on this page.

The franchise pays for its own research several times over. The process control segment spent $1,341.3 million on research and development in fiscal 20269, about 11% of its revenue10, and still earned segment profit of $5,482.8 million11. In the June 2026 quarter the segment's revenue was $3,256.8 million, up 13.2% from a year earlier1213.

The verdict is a wide moat. It would be in question if the process control segment's gross margin fell below 62% for a full year while revenue grew, which would mean customers had found a cheaper referee.

The franchise after its own research and selling costs; a fall below 40% would say the referee is being paid less.
