⚠ The Year Research FellLow threat

KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat

KLA cut research only 1.4% in its one bad year, which shows the budget is protected but not untouchable.

KLA's research budget has dipped twice in eleven years, most recently when revenue did. Research and development was $1,296.7 million in fiscal 2023 and $1,279.0 million in fiscal 20241, a fall of 1.4%2 in the year total revenue fell 6.5%3.

Research and development around the FY2024 downturn ($M)1,105FY20221,297FY20231,279FY20241,360FY20251,532FY2026KLA XBRL filings (SEC EDGAR) and Form 10-K FY2026
A 1.4% dip, recovered in a year.

The cut was small, and the next year made it back: $1,360.3 million in fiscal 20254. But it shows how the budget behaves. KLA does not treat research as untouchable in a downturn; it trims.

That matters because each node is won or lost years before revenue arrives. A toolmaker that cuts research during a slowdown risks missing the qualification window for the tools customers buy in the recovery.

The earlier dip was of a different kind. Research was $530.6 million in fiscal 2015 and $481.3 million in fiscal 20165, a year of modest revenue growth while KLA was preparing to merge with Lam Research6. The later dip, in fiscal 2024, was a response to the cycle. In neither case did KLA lose ground it has not since recovered.

Because revenue fell faster than research, the ratio rose. The 10-K puts research at 13% of revenue in fiscal 2024, against 11% in each of the two years since7. KLA held nearly all of its budget while revenue dropped and trimmed only at the edges, which is the defensible choice for a company whose tools are qualified years ahead.

A deeper downturn would test this. If revenue fell 15% or more and research fell with it by more than 5%, the lead would be paying for the downturn.
