A $12.6 Billion Backlog, a $1.8 Billion Contract FigureNarrow moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
KLA's backlog grew 60% to $12.6 billion, but the contract obligations it discloses are $1.8 billion, and the filings do not say who holds the orders.
KLA's backlog and its disclosed remaining performance obligations tell two different stories, and only one of them is binding. The 10-K says the backlog, "primarily consisting of sales orders where written customer requests have been received", rose from $7.86 billion at June 2025 to $12.57 billion at June 2026 "due to strong demand driven by the AI infrastructure buildout"1. That is up 59.9% and equal to 93% of fiscal 2026 revenue2.
The contract figure is much smaller. KLA discloses the transaction price for contracts not yet recognised as revenue as $1,775.1 million, and says it equals its contract liabilities; $1,537.0 million of it falls due within twelve months3. That is about 14% of the backlog4.
The difference is the nature of an order. A written customer request is a strong signal of intent, but KLA does not count it as a performance obligation, and customers can move or reshape orders when their plans change.
KLA does not say who is in the backlog. Revenue concentration is disclosed, and one customer took about 19% of revenue5; backlog concentration is not. Given that the backlog rose on AI infrastructure, it is likely weighted to the same leading-edge logic makers, but the filings do not show it.
The balance sheet shows the orders arriving in cash. Deferred system revenue, for tools shipped but not yet accepted, rose $312.1 million in the June 2026 quarter alone6, and KLA recorded $180.7 million of long-term receivables for the first time7. Some customers are being given longer to pay for the tools the backlog represents.
The backlog is large against the current run rate. $12.57 billion8 is about 3.4 times the $3,657.6 million of revenue in the June 2026 quarter910, close to a year of shipments at that pace.
A year earlier the backlog was $7.86 billion against fiscal 2025 revenue of $12,156.2 million11; it has grown far faster than sales.
The test is conversion. KLA guided $4.0 billion of revenue for the September 2026 quarter12; if the backlog fell in the next 10-K while revenue grew, orders would be arriving more slowly than they were being shipped.
Backlog $12.57bn from $7.86bn in a year.
Orders not yet shipped; a fall while revenue grows would mean new orders were slowing.
