⚠ Rivals With Deeper PocketsModerate threat

KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat

ASML and Applied Materials, both named in KLA's 10-K, are larger companies that could outspend KLA in its own market.

KLA's 10-K is candid that its rivals can outspend it. It says some competitors "may have greater financial, research, engineering, manufacturing and marketing resources than we have"1. The market values bear that out: on 25 September 2026 ASML was worth $656.33 billion and Applied Materials $383.87 billion2, against KLA's $245.24 billion3.

KLA research and development ($M)531FY2015609FY2018929FY20211,279FY20241,532FY2026KLA XBRL filings (SEC EDGAR) and Form 10-K FY2026
Nearly three times FY2015.

Size matters because process control is won by research. KLA spent $1,532.1 million on research and development in fiscal 20264. A larger rival that decided to take inspection seriously could match that without straining.

Applied Materials already sells electron beam inspection tools, and argues its case on its own pages.

KLA's capital spending is small next to those rivals' balance sheets. It spent $375.9 million on property and equipment in fiscal 20265, 2.8% of revenue6. Process control is won in the laboratory and at the customer's fab, not in large factories, which is part of why a larger rival cannot simply build its way in.

KLA is not short of money either. It ended fiscal 2026 with $1,649.8 million of cash and $3,252.6 million of marketable securities7, and generated $3,767.1 million of free cash flow8. The difference from its larger rivals is what the cash is for: KLA returned 88.9% of free cash flow to shareholders9, so a sustained research contest would be paid for out of the buyback rather than out of the balance sheet.

The protection is that a customer qualifies an inspection method for a node and tends to keep it. The number to follow is KLA's research spending as a share of revenue, 11% in fiscal 202610: if a rival's process control push forced that above 13% without faster growth, KLA would be paying more to hold the same ground.
