China's Domestic ChipmakersThin moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

China's domestic chipmakers made China 43% of KLA's revenue in fiscal 2024, and export rules have cut that to 30%.

China is KLA's largest market by shipments, and its growth now comes from customers building older chips. Revenue shipped to China was $4,048.4 million in fiscal 2026, 29.8% of the total1. The 10-K says it was flat because "continued investments in legacy-node technologies by domestic semiconductor companies were largely offset by export control restrictions"2.

Six percent to 43% in nine years, then back to 30%.

The customer group grew fast before the rules bit. China was 6% of KLA's revenue in fiscal 20153, 27% in fiscal 20194 and 42.8% in fiscal 20245.

These customers are different from TSMC. They buy for mature processes, where inspection intensity is lower, and they are building capacity on a national plan, so their demand is less tied to any one product cycle. They do not appear in KLA's list of customers above 10%, which since fiscal 2024 names only TSMC6.

The rules that govern this group are argued on China and the Export Rules. This page is about the customers themselves: diversified by name, concentrated by country.

The quarterly figures show the share falling through fiscal 2026. China was 24.3% of revenue in the quarter to March 20267 and 31.2% over the first nine months8, so the first half of the year was far higher than the second. The domestic buyers kept spending in the first half; rules and timing pulled the second half down.

The feared decline has so far been smaller than forecast. When the December 2024 rules were announced, TrendForce reported KLA expecting its China revenue to fall about 20% in 20259; in fiscal 2025 it fell from $4,196.7 million to $4,042.6 million10, about 4%11, and in fiscal 2026 it was flat12.

KLA does not report its own assets in China separately. Its long-lived assets are reported for the United States, Europe, Singapore, Israel and the rest of Asia13, with no separate figure for China, even though China is its largest market by shipments.

The share is the measure. It fell to 26.2% in the June 2026 quarter14. If domestic Chinese chipmakers kept buying legacy-node tools while KLA's China share fell below 20%, the difference would be going to domestic suppliers.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

China share 42.8% in FY2024, 29.8% in FY2026, 26.2% in Q4.
