Communications SolutionsNarrow moat

Amphenol (APH) — moat facet

Communications Solutions sold $12.1 billion in 2025 at a 31.1% margin, three-fifths of Amphenol's segment profit, almost all of the increase from AI.

Communications Solutions is the segment that turned Amphenol into an AI company. It sold $12,056.0 million to outside customers in 2025, 52% of net sales1, and earned $3,746.6 million of segment operating income2, 59.5% of the total3.

Operating income 4.3 times 2020's.

What is inside it is described in the segment note: "connector and interconnect systems, including high speed, radio frequency, power, fiber optic and other interconnect products; coaxial, fiber optic and high-speed cable; antennas; and other products"4, sold into IT datacom, mobile devices, industrial, communications networks, automotive, commercial aerospace and defense5. Of the three segment descriptions, only this one includes mobile devices.

It was formed on 1 January 2022, when Amphenol replaced its two old segments with three and moved "All businesses previously reported in the Cable Products and Solutions segment" into it6; the 2020 and 2021 figures were recast7. The segment has since absorbed Andrew in 20258 and CommScope's cable business in 2026, whose goodwill "was assigned to the Communications Solutions segment"9.

It is paid per part: connectors, cable assemblies and antennas sold to equipment makers and their contract manufacturers, with no recurring fee. The profit comes from volume and mix. The margin was 21.5% in 2020, 21.2% in 2021, 22.0% in 2022, 21.6% in 2023, 24.8% in 2024 and 31.1% in 202510, and 33.6% in the June 2026 quarter11. Depreciation and amortisation were $486.9 million in 202512, 4.0% of its sales13, more than the other segments.

Growth has been fast and uneven. Sales were $4,056.2 million in 2020, $4,832.1 million in 2021, $5,652.4 million in 202214, $4,912.8 million in 2023, $6,323.8 million in 2024 and $12,056.0 million in 202515: 24.3% a year over five years16, but down 13.1% in 202317. In the June 2026 quarter sales were $5,383.6 million, up 85% and 42% organically1819.

The first quarter of 2026 showed the same pattern at a lower level. Communications Solutions sold $4,534.7 million and earned $1,389.4 million, a 30.6% margin20, so the June quarter added $848.9 million of sales and $418.9 million of profit in three months21. Almost half of the extra sales became segment profit. That is the operating leverage of a factory full of orders, and it works in reverse when the orders stop.

Both CommScope purchases sit in it. "The Andrew acquisition is included in the Communications Solutions segment"22, and so is the cable business, so the segment will carry most of the amortisation of acquired intangibles in 2026. It sold $104.6 million to the other segments in 202523. Most of the June-quarter growth was American. The segment sold $1,980.4 million to the United States against $780.5 million a year earlier, and $2,705.2 million to other foreign locations against $1,614.1 million24, gains of 153.7% and 67.6%25. In the first half of 2026 it earned $3,197.7 million of segment operating income26, already 85% of its 2025 total27.

The outlook rests on AI. China took $2,205.2 million of the segment's 2025 sales28, 18.3%29, and the United States $3,215.6 million30. The line's verdict turns on its margin: if it falls back below 25% while sales still grow, the AI business will be pricing like the rest of the connector trade.
