Capital Spending Rose to Four Percent of SalesNarrow moat
Amphenol (APH) — moat facet
Amphenol spent about 3% of sales on plant for years; the AI build-out has pushed that above 4%, most of it in Asia.
One reason Amphenol turns so much profit into cash is that it needs so little equipment. Capital spending was $172.1 million in 2015, 3.1% of sales, $360.4 million in 2021, 3.3%, and $372.8 million in 2023, 3.0%12. For a manufacturer with dozens of plants, 3% of sales is a small bill.
It has risen. Capital spending was $665.4 million in 2024, 4.4% of sales, and $996.6 million in 2025, 4.3%34. In the June 2026 quarter it was $355.5 million5, 4.1%6, and management said the second half of 2026 may be "modestly higher" than the typical 3% to 4% range7.
The money has gone where the growth is. At the end of 2025, 79% of long-lived assets were outside the United States and 37% in China, against 73% and 29% a year earlier; the company says these increases "relate primarily to the significant investments the Company has made to support sales of its AI-related products"8. Long-lived assets rose 36.7% in the year, to $2,864.6 million910.
This is a sensible use of cash while orders run ahead of sales. The question is what happens to the plant if AI demand cools. Buildings and machines bought for one product family are less flexible than the general-manager system around them.
The plant is spread thinly. Long-lived assets were $598.8 million in the United States, $1,050.4 million in China and $1,215.4 million elsewhere at the end of 202511, $2,864.6 million in all, against total assets of $36,236.9 million12. Long-lived assets are under a tenth of the balance sheet13, which is why the company can grow without heavy spending. In the first half of 2026 capital spending was $647.1 million14, 4.0% of sales15. In the June quarter it was $355.5 million against $297.1 million a year earlier16.
A return to 3% of sales once the build-out ends would confirm the model is still light; spending that stays above 5% of sales for two years would mean the AI business needs a heavier balance sheet than the rest of Amphenol ever did.
Capex 4.3% of sales in 2025 against 3.0% in 2023.
How heavy the business is getting; above 5% for two years would mean AI needs a different balance sheet.
