Cash Without Much CapitalWide moat
Amphenol (APH) — moat facet
Amphenol's operating cash flow rose 5.2 times in a decade on capital spending of 3% to 4% of sales, and that cash funds both the dividend and the deals.
The fourth part of Amphenol's moat is financial: it earns a lot of cash on very little capital. Operating cash flow rose from $1,030.5 million in 2015 to $5,374.7 million in 20251, 5.2 times in ten years2. Capital spending in the same period ran at 3% to 4% of sales3, and free cash flow in 2025 was about $4.4 billion4, slightly more than net income.
That pattern is what lets the rest of the moat work. The general managers can run their businesses without asking the centre for large sums, and the centre can buy more businesses without selling shares. Return on invested capital, by the repo method, has been between 14.8% and 27.9% every year since 20155.
Four pages below look at how the cash is made and spent. Cash That Keeps Up With Profit tests the conversion. Buybacks That Keep the Count Flat shows that repurchases have offset option dilution rather than shrunk the company. Capital Spending Rose to Four Percent of Sales tracks the AI build-out. A Balance Sheet Borrowed for One Deal covers the debt raised for CommScope.
The facet has weakened in 2026. Net debt went from about $4.1 billion to $13.4 billion6, and interest expense in the first half, $421.6 million, was 2.7 times a year earlier78. The dividend was raised to $0.25 a quarter in October 20259, $0.125 after the September 2026 split10, so the cash calls are heavier on every side.
The dividend has risen with the cash. The board raised the quarterly rate from $0.105 to $0.11 in October 2023 and to $0.165 in July 202411, then to $0.25 in the fourth quarter of 202512, all before the September 2026 split. Dividends paid were $802.2 million in 202513, about 19% of net income14, which leaves most of the cash for acquisitions.
The working capital has stayed tight through the boom. Days sales outstanding were 66 at the end of 2025 and inventory days 7715, both lower than a year earlier. The company collects faster than many industrial suppliers, and that is part of why its cash matches its profit. The first quarter of 2026 was similar. Operating cash flow was $1.1 billion and free cash flow $831 million16, in a quarter that absorbed the first months of CommScope. Cash paid for income taxes was $1,084.1 million in 202517, against a tax provision of $1,295.4 million18, so the reported profit was not flattered by taxes the company had not yet paid. Capital spending took $996.6 million of that19.
The facet is wide but narrowing. Operating cash flow that failed to rise in 2026, a year that includes a full half of CommScope, would break it: the business would be earning less cash on a much larger capital base.
Net debt $13.4bn and interest 2.7 times higher after CommScope.
The fuel for dividends and deals; no increase in 2026, with CommScope included, would mean the larger company earns less cash per dollar invested.
