⚠ Andrew and the Slump in Mobile NetworksModerate threat
Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat
Amphenol bought Andrew for $2 billion to serve wireless operators, and organic sales in that market fell 6% in the June 2026 quarter.
Not every purchase lands in a growing market, and Andrew is the current example. Amphenol bought CommScope's outdoor wireless and distributed antenna businesses for $2,022.7 million in January 20251, adding "advanced antenna and associated interconnect products" for wireless networks2.
The market it serves has been shrinking inside Amphenol's own mix. Mobile networks and broadband together were about 12% of sales in 2019, 10% in 2020 and 2022, 8% in 2023 and 6% in 2024345678. With Andrew and then CommScope's broadband business, the combined communications networks market was 10% of sales in 20259 and 11% in the June 2026 quarter10.
Those figures are acquired, not grown. In the June 2026 quarter communications networks sales rose 55% in dollars, but the chief executive said: "On an organic basis, sales actually moderated by 6% from prior year, due to demand moderations from both communications network operators and wireless equipment manufacturers"11. He expected a further sequential decline in the mid teens in the third quarter12.
That is the risk in buying a margin rather than a market. Andrew was expected to earn an EBITDA margin of about 25%13, which Amphenol could protect with its cost discipline, but no system raises volume that operators are not ordering. The chief executive still sees an opportunity: "We are better positioned than ever with both service provider" and equipment customers after the Andrew and CommScope purchases, he told analysts14.
The communications networks line will show whether the purchase was well timed. If organic sales in that market are still falling in the first half of 2027, Andrew will have been a cheap entry into a declining business.
