From 74,000 to 170,000 PeopleNarrow moat
Amphenol (APH) — moat facet
Amphenol has 170,000 employees, nine in ten outside the United States, and it sells more per person than it did when it had 74,000.
Amphenol is a manufacturer first, and its moat includes where it chooses to make things. The 10-K says the company seeks to improve bought businesses partly through "our access to low-cost manufacturing around the world"1. At the end of 2025 it employed about 170,000 people, of whom about 15,000 were in the United States2; it "employs approximately 90% of its workforce outside the United States"3.
The workforce has grown faster than any other measure of the company. It was about 74,000 in 20194, 80,000 in 20205, 90,000 in 20216, 91,000 in 20227, 95,000 in 20238, 125,000 in 20249 and 170,000 in 202510. That is 2.3 times in six years11. The CommScope purchase in January 2026 added about 20,000 more12.
Output per person has still risen. Net sales per employee were about $111,000 in 2019 and about $136,000 in 202513. For a company whose products are cut, moulded, crimped and assembled, often by hand, that is productivity rather than automation replacing people.
The structure also keeps labour relations local. "Less than 10% of Amphenol's U.S. workforce is represented by an independent trade union or covered by collective bargaining"14, and with 90% of staff abroad, labour cost is set plant by plant and country by country.
The factories are built for many kinds of work. The 10-K lists "molding, stamping, plating, turning, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, 3D printing, extruding, die casting" among its processes15, and says the plants are "generally vertically integrated operations from the initial design stage through final design and manufacturing"16. Many are certified to quality standards including ISO9001, AS9100 for aerospace and IATF16949 for cars17. It places them close to buyers: its "global coverage positions us near many of our customers' locations"18.
The advantage is flexibility: plants can be opened where customers build and closed where they leave. Sales per employee will say whether the hiring was wise: if it falls back below $120,000 in a year when CommScope is fully counted, the growth in people will have run ahead of the growth in work.
Net sales per employee about $136,000 in 2025, from $111,000 in 2019.
Whether headcount growth buys output; below $120,000 with CommScope counted would say it does not.
