Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat

Interconnect and Sensor Systems, which carries the car business, earned 21% in the June 2026 quarter while Amphenol's other segments earned 30% and more.

The part of Amphenol that sells to cars earns the least. Interconnect and Sensor Systems, which the 10-K describes as selling "sensors, sensor-based systems, connectors and value-add interconnect systems used in the automotive, industrial" and other markets1, earned a segment margin of 15.4% in 2020, 17.9% in 2021, 18.5% in 2022, 18.3% in 2023, 18.4% in 2024 and 19.5% in 20252. In the June 2026 quarter it earned 21.0%3, against 33.6% in Communications Solutions and 30.1% in Harsh Environment Solutions4.

Interconnect and Sensor Systems sales by customer location, 2025 ($M)1,561United States959China2,637Other foreignAmphenol Form 10-K FY2025, net sales by segment and geography
Nearly a fifth of the segment sells into China.

Its sales are also the least American. In 2025 the segment sold $1,561.1 million in the United States, $959.4 million in China and $2,636.5 million elsewhere5: 18.6% in China, against 8.6% for Harsh Environment Solutions6.

A 20% margin is a good business in most industries. The danger is in comparison and allocation. As Communications Solutions grows, capital and management attention follow it, and a segment earning two-thirds of the company margin can become the part that gets starved or sold. It grew only 13% organically in the June quarter7, the slowest of the three.

The car market also brings pricing pressure that the other segments do not face on the same scale. Carmakers buy in volume and negotiate every year. Its first-quarter margin was 20.2%8, so the improvement is real but modest.

Should its margin slip back below 18%, its level of 2022 to 2024, while the other two segments hold above 25%, the company will be carrying a business that no longer fits the returns the rest of it earns.
