Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat

Communications Solutions carried 61% of Amphenol's segment depreciation and amortisation in 2025, the fixed cost of building for AI.

Where a company spends on plant tells you what it expects to need, and Amphenol's spending is now concentrated in one segment. In 2025 depreciation and amortisation charged to the segments was $486.9 million in Communications Solutions, $166.5 million in Harsh Environment Solutions and $150.0 million in Interconnect and Sensor Systems, with $119.0 million at corporate1, a total of $922.4 million2.

The AI segment carries most of the plant.

Communications Solutions carried 60.6% of the segment charge3 and ran at 4.0% of its sales, against 2.8% and 2.9% in the other two4. Part of that is amortisation of Andrew's intangibles; part is the new capacity for data-centre products.

Capacity built for a boom is the classic trap for a component supplier. When demand is strong, customers want to be sure of supply and suppliers build to meet it. When demand eases, the plant stays and the depreciation keeps coming. The 10-K warns that the growth of AI demand depends on "the amount and mix of capital spending by our customers"5, which Amphenol cannot set.

Amphenol has two things in its favour. Its capacity is spread across many general managers' businesses, not built into one giant plant, and its products are small enough to be made in modest facilities that can be retooled. The company's own summary of its plant spending is that the increase in overseas assets relates "primarily to the significant investments the Company has made to support sales of its AI-related products"6.

The charge will say whether the build-out is paying. If Communications Solutions' depreciation and amortisation passes 5% of its sales while its margin falls, the segment will be carrying plant faster than it can fill it.
