Twenty-Three Billion Dollars Since 2015Wide moat

Amphenol (APH) — moat facet

Amphenol has spent about $23 billion on acquisitions since 2015 while keeping return on capital between 15% and 20%, the proof that it buys well.

Amphenol grows by buying, and the goodwill on its balance sheet is the running bill. Payments for acquisitions, net of cash acquired, came to about $12.4 billion from 2015 to 202512, and the first half of 2026 added $10,684.0 million, almost all of it for CommScope's Connectivity and Cable Solutions business3. That is about $23.1 billion in eleven and a half years4.

Goodwill up 3.6 times since 2019, and by two-thirds in six months.

The goodwill line shows how much of that price was paid for something other than plant and stock. It was $4,867.1 million at the end of 20195, $6,376.8 million at the end of 2021 after MTS and Halo6, $8,236.2 million at the end of 2024 after CIT7, $10,575.4 million at the end of 2025 after Andrew and Trexon8, and $17,554.7 million at 30 June 20269. That is 3.6 times in six and a half years10.

The method is stated in each annual report. The company says it seeks to enhance the performance of acquired companies "by leveraging Amphenol's position with customers across our diverse end markets, our leading technologies and our access to low-cost manufacturing around the world"11. In plain terms: buy a niche business, give it Amphenol's customers and Amphenol's factories, and let its general manager run it.

The proof that this has worked is in the returns, not the goodwill. Return on invested capital, by the repo method, stayed between 14.8% and 19.9% from 2015 to 202412, while the capital base more than doubled13. A buyer that overpaid would have seen that ratio drift down as each deal added capital faster than profit. The jump in 2026 is almost entirely one deal. Goodwill rose $6,979.3 million in the first half of 202614, and the CommScope purchase accounted for $6,958.0 million of it15.

The goodwill will be tested now that it has doubled in a year. If return on invested capital for 2026, with the full CommScope price in the denominator, falls below 15%, the lowest level of the last decade, the purchase will have been priced for growth that has not arrived.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Goodwill $17.6bn in June 2026, from $10.6bn six months earlier.

The accumulated price of buying; growth without a matching rise in operating income would mean overpaying.
