Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat

About nine in ten of Amphenol's workers are outside the United States while more than a third of its sales are inside it, which is exactly the gap trade policy targets.

Making things where they are cheapest works until governments decide where things may be made. About 155,000 of Amphenol's 170,000 employees were outside the United States at the end of 202512. The 10-K describes how "there have been significant changes to U.S. and other countries' trade policies, export control laws, sanctions" and related rules3, and the company has lived through the cost directly: the June 2026 quarter carried an $80 million net benefit from recovering IEEPA tariffs that had earlier been paid4.

The American share of staff stayed near 9%.

The American share of the workforce is small but growing. It was about 12,000 of 125,000 at the end of 20245 and about 15,000 of 170,000 at the end of 20256, about 10% and 9%7. The share of sales going to American customers is several times higher, 34.6% in 20258, which is the gap tariffs are aimed at.

Amphenol's answer has been to spread production rather than move it. With more than 140 businesses, each can shift its own lines. But the long-lived assets tell a different story: 79% sat outside the United States at the end of 2025, and 37% in China alone9, a concentration argued on China: Thirteen Percent of Sales, Thirty-Seven Percent of the Plant. The company presents the spread as a defense: its global presence offers "a level of resiliency and diversification against local risks and challenges that may emerge in any single geography"10.

A tariff regime that taxes where goods are made, rather than where they are sold, would reach most of the company. The American share of employees tells the story: if it stays near 9% while the American share of sales keeps rising toward 40%, the exposure is growing, not shrinking.
