Many Markets, No MasterNarrow moat
Amphenol (APH) — moat facet
Amphenol's breadth across eight markets made its margins steady, but IT datacom went from 19% of sales in 2019 to 43% in 2026 and now sets the direction.
Amphenol's second protection is breadth: it sells into so many markets that no single downturn can sink it. In 2019 its largest market, industrial, was 20% of sales, and seven others ran from 4% to 19%1. The chief executive has called this "balanced end market exposure across all areas of the electronics market"2. The Major Clients pages show the same thing from the customer side: no customer has reached 10% of sales since 20203.
That breadth produced the margin record. In a year when phones were weak, cars or aircraft were strong, and a federation of general managers could shift effort to wherever demand was. The 2025 mix still spans seven markets: IT datacom 36%, industrial 19%, automotive 15%, communications networks 10%, defense 9%, mobile devices 6% and commercial aerospace 5%4.
But the balance has tipped. IT datacom, about 19% of sales in 20195, was 36% in 20256 and 43% in the June 2026 quarter7. Four pages below look at what the rest still contributes. Industrial: A Fifth of Sales, Quietly is the steady base. Commercial Air and Defense: Long Programmes is the stickiest business. Automotive Fell From 23 Percent to 10 shows how fast a big market can shrink as a share. China Went From a Third of Sales to an Eighth is the geographic rebalancing.
The rest of the company is still large. Sales outside IT datacom were about $5.0 billion in the June 2026 quarter8, from roughly $3.6 billion a year earlier9, helped by acquisitions.
The company says the geographic spread is deliberate as well: "We believe our broad and balanced geographic distribution lowers our exposure to particular geographies"10. About 65% of 2025 sales were outside the United States11, and it makes its products "at facilities in approximately 40 countries around the world"12, which lets a business shift production when one country becomes difficult. The breadth also shows in the bad years. In 2020 sales rose 4.5%13 while commercial aerospace fell from 5% of sales to 3%1415, and in 2023, when sales fell 0.5%, IT datacom dropped to 19% while automotive rose to 23%16.
The June 2026 quarter shows the new shape: IT datacom 43%, industrial 20%, communications networks 11%, automotive 10%, defense 8%, mobile devices 4% and commercial aerospace 4%17. Six markets still carry 57% of sales, but no one of them carries more than a fifth. Industrial alone, about $4.4 billion in 202518, was larger than IT datacom had been a year earlier.
The facet is narrow and narrowing: the breadth is real, but it no longer sets the company's direction. One threshold settles it: if IT datacom passes half of sales, Amphenol will be a data-centre supplier with a diversified tail, and this protection will have become a memory.
IT datacom 43% of sales in Q2 2026, from 19% in 2019.
The diversified business beneath the AI boom; a fall in dollars while IT datacom grows would mean the base is eroding.
