China Went From a Third of Sales to an EighthNarrow moat
Amphenol (APH) — moat facet
China fell from 31.6% of Amphenol's sales in 2018 to 12.7% in mid-2026, while the United States rose to 39%.
Amphenol has quietly moved its sales away from China. Sales shipped to customers in China were $2,067.3 million in 2017, 29.5% of the total, and $2,594.0 million in 2018, 31.6%12. The share was 28.0% in 2019, 30.2% in 2020 and 28.0% in 202134, 25.9% in 2022, 23.0% in 202356, 22.3% in 2024 and 15.9% in 202578. In the June 2026 quarter China took $1,113.0 million of $8,758.1 million, 12.7%910.
The dollars did not collapse; the rest grew around them. China sales were $3,673.1 million in 202511, higher than in any earlier year, and rose 26.2% in the June 2026 quarter12. Sales to the United States rose 76.2% in the same quarter13, taking the American share to 39.0%14, from 30.7% in 201915.
The shift fits the risks the company describes. The 10-K refers to "the Company's two largest markets, the U.S. and China"16, and notes that China has added certain U.S. companies to its "Unreliable Entity List"17, although "to date, none of such restrictions have had a material adverse effect" on Amphenol18. Selling less of the total into China reduces what a political decision in either capital could cost.
Geography is measured by where products are shipped19, so some of those Chinese sales are components that leave China inside finished goods. The share still says where Amphenol's customers build.
The June 2026 quarter shows where the Chinese sales now come from. Communications Solutions sold $698.0 million there, Harsh Environment Solutions $166.2 million and Interconnect and Sensor Systems $248.8 million20. The data-centre and mobile segment is 62.7% of it21. In Interconnect and Sensor Systems, Chinese sales grew only 6.8% in the June 2026 quarter22. Chinese sales rose in dollars in both 2024 and 202523.
If China's share of sales rises back above 20% at the same time as China's share of Amphenol's long-lived assets, 37% in 202524, keeps rising, the company will have moved its sales out and its factories in, the combination argued on China: Thirteen Percent of Sales, Thirty-Seven Percent of the Plant.
China 12.7% of sales in Q2 2026; United States 39.0%.
The political exposure in sales; a rise back above 20% would undo a decade of rebalancing.
