Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat

More than half of Harsh Environment Solutions' sales go to American customers, and its record 30.1% margin is riding a defense upswing Amphenol does not control.

The segment that houses Amphenol's defense business is also its most American. Harsh Environment Solutions sold $3,211.0 million of its $5,881.7 million in 2025 to customers in the United States, 54.6%, against $508.5 million in China and $2,162.2 million elsewhere12. For the company as a whole the American share was 34.6%3.

Over half the segment sells to American customers.

That concentration is a strength in a rising defense budget and a weakness in a falling one. Amphenol does not disclose sales by government customer, and its 10-K lists defense end applications without naming programmes. What it does show is growth: defense sales rose 37% in dollars and 24% organically in the June 2026 quarter4, which the chief executive called "broad based growth across nearly all areas of the defense market"5.

Defense demand is set by budgets, not by the market Amphenol competes in. A pause in procurement, a continuing resolution or a shift in priorities can cut orders across programmes at once, and no general manager can offset that by working harder.

The segment's margin shows how good the current conditions are. Harsh Environment Solutions earned 30.1% in the June 2026 quarter against 25.2% a year earlier6, above anything in its 2020 to 2025 range7. Some of that is Trexon and CIT, and some is the defense upswing. The segment's American sales were $990.5 million in the June 2026 quarter, against $772.3 million a year earlier8.

The margin is the warning light. If Harsh Environment Solutions falls back below 25% while its sales are still growing, the defense tailwind will have been carrying the segment more than its purchases were.
