◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Verizon (VZ) — the variant view

The market prices Verizon at 12 times earnings as if it were shrinking, but an 11% free cash flow yield returned to owners compounds even on flat revenue, provided the debt allows it.

The market is valuing Verizon as a business in gentle decline, and the evidence points to a business that is merely not growing. At $46.68 on 28 September 2026 the market value was $193.94 billion, 12.16 times trailing earnings and 9.20 times forward earnings, with a dividend yield of 6.06%1. The value was $253.94 billion at the end of 20192, about 23.6% higher3, and $188.06 billion at the end of 20154.

A decade of low multiples on flat revenue.

The multiple has sagged for a decade. On market value over net income, Verizon traded at about 16.6 times at the end of 2016, 13.2 in 2019, 7.8 in 2022 and 10.0 in 20255. That is what investors pay for revenue that grew about 0.5% a year6.

What the price may be missing is the cash arithmetic. Free cash flow was $21.53 billion over the trailing twelve months7, about 11.1% of the market value8. The company pays about 6% out as dividends and has started buying back stock, $3.5 billion in the first half of 20269. Cash returned to owners at roughly 8% of the market value a year, from a business whose churn is falling and whose phone base is growing again, compounds even with flat revenue.

The counterweight is the debt. Enterprise value was $385.24 billion10, nearly twice the market value, and the equity is a thin slice on top of $165,231 million of debt11. A small fall in free cash flow reaches the shareholder magnified.

The shares are among the least volatile large stocks in America, with a beta of 0.2412, and trade at 1.87 times book value13 and 7.54 times enterprise value to EBITDA14. Analysts' average target was $51.5815, about 10% above the price16. That is the valuation of a utility with a cable company's competitive problems, which is roughly what Verizon has become.

The equity has been a poor investment for a decade even with the dividend. Market value was $188.06 billion at the end of 201517 and $193.94 billion in September 202618, up 3.1% in nearly eleven years19, while dividends of about $11 billion a year were paid out20. Almost all of the return came from the dividend, which is what investors now expect.

The market is right to refuse a growth multiple; it may be wrong to price a decline. Free cash flow under $20 billion in 2027, with the buyback still running, would prove the decline view right after all.
