⚠ Prepaid Churn Near Four Times PostpaidLow threat
Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat
Verizon's prepaid tier loses about 35% of its customers a year, so the $6.5 billion TracFone purchase bought traffic on the network, not loyalty.
At 3.59% a month1, Verizon's core prepaid tier loses roughly 35% of its customers in a year2. Every one of them has to be replaced to stand still, and replacing them costs marketing, retail commissions and sometimes a discounted phone.
That is the price of a customer with no contract. The 10-K notes that competition includes resellers such as the cable companies3, which sell wireless on Verizon's own network, and prepaid customers are the ones most likely to move for a lower price.
The TracFone purchase added about $6.5 billion of cash and shares plus a contingent payment45 for a business whose customers stay on average a little over two years6. The value lies in the network traffic and the feeder role, not in loyalty.
The churn rate has not improved. Core prepaid churn was 3.59% in the June 2026 quarter against 3.60% a year earlier7, so the loyalty programme and new plans that lowered postpaid churn have not reached prepaid. ARPU rose, to $33.378, which suggests Verizon chose price over volume in this tier.
Past 4% a month, the tier would be leaking faster than any sensible marketing budget can refill it.
