Licences Worth 39 Percent of the Balance SheetWide moat

Verizon (VZ) — moat facet

Wireless licences are 39% of Verizon's assets, a barrier that keeps new national networks out but does nothing about the two already in.

A large part of what Verizon owns is not towers or cable but a stack of permits. Wireless licences were carried at $158,159 million on 30 June 2026, against total assets of $410,186 million1, or 38.6% of everything on the balance sheet2. That is more than the goodwill of $30,664 million3 five times over.

The licences are worth more than the equity.

The licences are the barrier to entry in plain form. Nobody can build a national wireless network without airwaves, and airwaves are sold by the government in auctions that happen rarely. The 10-K lists what Verizon holds: "700 MHz", PCS, "AWS 1 and AWS 3", C-Band and millimetre wave4. It keeps adding: in June 2026 it closed a $1.0 billion purchase of spectrum from UScellular and won 82 licences in the AWS-3 auction "valued at approximately $ 3.2 billion"5.

The balance barely moves because licences are not amortised. It was $156,613 million at the end of 2024 and $157,039 million at the end of 20256. A new purchase raises it; nothing brings it down except an impairment or a sale.

What the licences do not give Verizon is exclusivity in the market. AT&T and T-Mobile hold national spectrum too, and the 10-K names both as competitors7. The barrier keeps a fourth or fifth national network out; it does nothing about the three already in.

The holdings span every band the FCC has sold. The 10-K lists "700 MHz", PCS, "AWS 1 and AWS 3", "the 3.7 GHz band (C-Band)" and millimetre wave8. Low bands travel far and through walls; mid bands such as C-Band carry more data; millimetre wave carries the most over the shortest distance. Owning all of them is what lets one network serve a farm and a stadium.

The licences are worth what the customers on them pay. Wireless service revenue was $83,703 million in 20259, about 53 cents a year for every dollar of licence value10. Should that ratio slip under 50 cents as new purchases arrive, Verizon will be buying airwaves faster than it can sell them.
