⚠ Fibre Net Adds of 155,000 a QuarterModerate threat
Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat
Verizon adds about 155,000 fibre customers a quarter while passing at least 2 million new homes a year, so the build runs three times ahead of the fill.
Verizon added 155 thousand fibre connections in the June 2026 quarter1, about 620 thousand a year at that pace2. It plans to pass at least 2.0 million more homes and businesses in 2026 alone3. The build is running about three times the fill4.
Some lag is normal. A passing takes time to market, and customers switch when their current contract or promotion ends. But the returns on fibre come from penetration, and AT&T added 367,000 fibre subscribers in the same quarter5, on a footprint of 38.6 million locations6.
Verizon's fibre base doubled largely by purchase. The organic net additions show the rate at which it can win customers on its own, and 155 thousand a quarter is a modest rate for a company that paid $22.3 billion to get into the business at scale7.
Cable is losing broadband customers at about the pace Verizon gains fibre ones. Comcast reported domestic broadband net losses of 167,000 in the quarter8 and Charter said its Internet customers "declined by 172,000"9. The pool of switchers exists; the question is how many of them Verizon wins against AT&T's fibre and everyone's fixed wireless.
Below 200 thousand in the June 2027 quarter, after a year of selling Frontier fibre under the Verizon brand, the purchase would be filling more slowly than it was priced to.
